ODU baseball dropped the series finale Sunday 17-9 loss to Northeastern. In a game where the Huskies had as many hits as they had runs, their offense put ODU in an early hole they couldn’t climb out of.
Offensively Old Dominion was able to score 20 runs in the series, but it was not enough to answer the high-powered Huskie offense.
“We have pitched very well this year. Today we were very sloppy on the mound. 17 hits and 13 free base runners will get you beat every time. The guys didn’t quit after getting down a bunch. I thought our approaches at the plate were much better this weekend,” said Head Coach Chris Finwood.
Alex Lane led the charge in Sunday’s matchup going 3-6 and driving in six runs for NU. Lane got the Huskies on the board first with a three-run homer to right field. The opposition added to their lead in the second inning with another pair of RBI singles and a passed ball, making it 6-0.
Lane highlighted a four run third inning with a two-run single and Northeastern took a commanding 10-0 lead.
The Monarchs were able to finally cut into the lead in the fourth as Jake Ticer drew a two out walk, Evan Holman crushed a ball deep down the right field line to plate Ticer. TJ Aiken followed with a single to right, cutting the deficit to 11-2.
Northeastern added four more runs in the fifth and sixth inning but the Monarchs weren’t done fighting. Pinch hitter Jackson Tone opened the sixth with a single down the right field line, Hunter Cole and Kenny Levari drew walks to then load the bases. Nick Mueller entered the game as a pinch hitter and smoked a ball down the right field line, good for a bases clearing triple. Carter Sunderman then grounded out, driving in Mueller making it 15-6 going in to the seventh.

Kyle Finn pitched the only scoreless inning of the day for ODU in the seventh. The offense came back with three runs of their own in the eighth. Levari opened with a double, Jack Slater was hit by a pitch and a Maverick Stallings walk loaded the bases. Kyle Edwards smacked a single to left scoring Levari and Slater. Steven Meier was able to plate one more on a groundout making it 16-9.
The Huskies pushed across their final run in the ninth on a day that ODU used eight pitchers. Opener Brandon Pond was saddled with the loss for the Monarchs.
ODU baseball goes back to work Tuesday, taking on Princeton for a two-game set at the Bud.
