ODU Sports Round Up – November 1st

Women’s Soccer advances in the Sun Belt quarterfinals and Field Hockey knocks off UConn to win 10 straight before the Big East Tournament. Get caught up on all things ODU Sports!

Women’s Soccer (10-2-5 / 5-2-3 SBC)

ODU wrapped the regular season with a 1-1 tie against Louisiana-Monroe last week. Megan Watts scored the clutch, game tying goal with a 1:14 left.

In the first round of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament, Ashlynn Kulha headed in a corner kick with just over six minutes remaining to break a scoreless tie. ODU’s defense held strong over the final minute to knock out Georgia State and advance to the semi-finals.

The Monarchs will now face Georgia Southern on Friday at 5pm. For more info on the SBC tournament, please check out our preview article.

Men’s Soccer (5-6-5 / 2-6-1 SBC)

The Monarchs closed out their regular season with a 2-0 loss at #6 Marshall and a 2-1 loss to #7 West Virginia. Against the Mountaineers, Karan Mandair converted a penalty kick to tie the match at 1-1 with just under six minutes to play. WVU was awarded a penalty kick of their own in the final minute, it found the back of the net and spoiled ODU’s chance at coming away with a point.

On Sunday, Old Dominion starts the Sun Belt Tournament as the #8 seed where they will face top seeded Marshall in Huntington. Be on the lookout for our Men’s Soccer conference tournament preview on Sunday.

Field Hockey (12-5 / 6-1 Big East)

ODU pulled off a thrilling 3-2 overtime road victory against UConn to conclude their regular season slate. Rina Tsioles scored the game-winner three minutes into overtime. The Monarchs snapped a 13-game losing streak to the Huskies over a 10-year span. They head into the Big East tournament as the #2 seed and on a 10 game win streak.

Volleyball (11-15 / 3-9 SBC)

The Monarchs split a road series with Appalachian State last week. ODU fell 3-0 on Thursday before bouncing back for a 3-1 win over ASU on Friday.

Old Dominion returns to Norfolk this Thursday and Friday where they will face Georgia State for their final home contests of the season. Both matchups are set for 6:30pm and Friday will be Senior Night.

Sailing

ODU wrapped up their Fall schedule with races at the MAISA Women’s Dinghy Championship and War Memorial Regatta over the weekend. The Monarchs finished 5th out of 14 teams in the MASIA Regatta and placed 8th out of 18 teams in the War Memorial Regatta.

Gianna Dewey will participate in the Women’s Singlehanded national Championship Nov. 11 and 12 at Tulane.

Swimming

Old Dominion Men’s Swimming defeated Gardner-Webb 171-91 and the Women’s team split the day defeating Gardner-Webb 146-113 and then falling to Campbell 185.5-75.5 on Saturday at Campbell.

The Monarchs have a pair of road meets over the weekend starting with Queens (CLT) and Colorado State in Charlotte on Friday. On Saturday, they travel to Davidson for a noon meet.

Men’s Tennis

ODU went 21-9 over the three day Virginia Tech Halloween Weekend Tournament last weekend. Yanis Moundir and Aryan Saleh each went 5-1, while Cosme Rolland De Ravel went 4-0 to lead the Monarchs.

Four of our Monarchs head west to compete in the ITA Fall Nationals

Women’s Golf
The Monarchs finished 11th in The Ally hosted by Mississippi State last week. ODU scored a combined 917 (+53) for the three days, led by Lucia Gonzalez who turned in a 10-over 226 to tie for 32nd. Women’s Golf returns to action in February.

Rowing

At the moment, we do not have results from the Head of the Lafayette over the weekend. We will include it in next week’s edition of the Round Up.
